Have you always been interested in music? What is your story and how did you start making music?
In the heart of North Carolina’s vibrant countryside, my musical journey began at the tender age of five, awakening to my mother’s hymns that resonated through our family’s 1000-acre estate and chain of grocery stores. Wayne Newton, my great uncle Warren’s nephew, boasted kinship with us, a fact my grandfather proudly proclaimed. Despite my initial embarrassment over Wayne’s voice, his undeniable success as the world’s highest-paid entertainer sparked my fascination with music.

Surrounded by a musical lineage on my mother’s Pruitt side, our family hub echoed with the sounds of legends like Charlie Poole, Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, and Earl Scruggs. Christmas Eve at Colmor’s house became a symphony of banjos, fiddles, dobros, guitars, bass, piano, and more, creating bluegrass magic like no other.

Amidst this musical tapestry, I secretly taught myself guitar while my family focused on banjos, dobros, and fiddles. My hidden talent emerged when a band I joined in Lynchburg, Virginia, performed an original song about Vietnam on the Jerry Lewis telethon, surprising my family and revealing my musical prowess.

Transitioning from nuclear work, I encountered George Wise and a band that seemed to follow me during my travels. We initially named ourselves Civil War, reflecting our mix of southern and northern influences. Evolving into Brother the Brother, we embarked on thrilling tours before personal reasons led George and me to part ways.

Undeterred, I continued crafting music, collaborating with Jordan since 1979. Our journey expanded with Blake Scott after Wolfman Jack’s passing, creating a musical legacy that continues to captivate and amaze. From porch gatherings to nationwide tours, my life unfolds as a dramatic, exciting, and thrilling musical odyssey.

What Has Been The Biggest Challenge In Your Career Thus Far?
In the labyrinthine and tumultuous journey of my musical saga, the initial hurdle cast a foreboding shadow as I grappled with the delicate equilibrium between familial obligations and the irresistible allure of the touring life. Now, with the nest emptied and the resolute backing of my kin, my golden years have transmuted into an expansive canvas for the realization of the musical opus I held dear.

Amidst the haunting melodies of offers that seduced, my resolve stood as an impenetrable fortress. Thrice, the industry summoned with proposals draped in veils of contingencies, seeking to ensnare me in the machinations of unseen forces, orchestrating a grand larceny of profits, leaving artists bereft in the aftermath. Yet, unyielding in my allegiance to integrity, I chose the solitary path of independence, channeling the defiant spirit of musical legends who defied the suffocating embrace of conformity.

While the charts stand as immutable bastions of fixity, within the sanctum of our clandestine circle, we carve an unwavering trajectory, etching our narrative onto the sprawling tapestry of the musical cosmos, where the echoes of our resistance resonate with a dramatic fervor.

How do you go about writing a song? Do you have a melody in your head and then write the other music for it or what’s Your typical songwriting process?
Crafting songs is akin to painting with emotions—an intricate canvas woven from personal experiences, learned lessons, and researched insights. Each melody serves as a vivid snapshot inspired by the diverse spectrum of life—embracing the good, enduring the bad, and confronting the ugly. As a songwriter, I channel these moments into the musical tapestry, passionately expressing them through the strings of my guitar. The lyrics, born from the rich wellspring of emotion, evolve into the narrative threads of my biography—a complex and multifaceted tale interwoven with drama, love, intense emotion, unwavering professionalism, and thrilling moments. My music, steeped in rich history, becomes a unique history lesson that unfolds as you listen—an auditory journey through time, resonating with the universal heartbeats of shared humanity.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
The digital revolution reshaped music consumption, transitioning from LPs to CDs and now thriving on vast online platforms. Despite these technological leaps, the financial chasm between industry giants making billions and struggling artists earning meager sums remains glaring. Artists decry the system, viewing it as a mere advertising mechanism that disproportionately benefits record labels. The internet, a potent force, offers vast possibilities but falls short in adequately compensating creators. This narrative of innovation and hardship underscores the urgent need for legal reforms and global accountability, as artists strive for a more equitable music industry.

The internet has effectively transformed artists into T-shirt salespeople, as traditional avenues like selling CDs and vinyl face near-impossibility. With the majority now streaming music on iPods and similar devices, physical sales have dwindled. This shift emphasizes the evolving challenge for artists to monetize their craft in a landscape dominated by digital streaming, further accentuating the struggle for fair compensation and the need for industry-wide reforms.

Would you have any advice for young people wanting to follow
in your footsteps?

Title: Nurturing Talent and Embracing Humanity: A Guide for Aspiring Musicians

In a world captivated by the allure of artificial intelligence in music production, it becomes crucial for young enthusiasts to embrace the essence of true artistry. As someone who has navigated the intricate realms of the music industry, I offer valuable advice to those eager to follow in my footsteps.

First and foremost, let the resonance of genuine music guide your journey. Pick up an instrument – whether it’s the guitar, violin, or trumpet – and embark on a journey to master the art. Learning to play an instrument not only connects you with the rich heritage of musical expression but also grounds you in the tangible world of human creativity.

In an age where technology allows for music creation without traditional skill, it’s essential to distinguish between artificial and authentic. While AI can undoubtedly produce sound, it lacks the soulful touch that comes from a musician’s heart and hands. Invest time in learning to read music, understanding the intricacies of musical composition, and cultivating a personal connection with your chosen instrument.

As a parallel pursuit, delve into the realms of business and entertainment studies. A musician’s journey extends beyond the harmonies and melodies; it involves navigating the complex landscape of the industry. Equip yourself with the knowledge of business strategies, entertainment dynamics, and industry trends. This dual expertise will not only enhance your marketability but also empower you to make informed decisions about your career.

Avoiding pitfalls is paramount. The music industry, with its vast opportunities, is equally rife with challenges. From contractual intricacies to the ever-evolving nature of trends, staying informed is your shield. Emphasize humanity in your approach – not just in your music but in your interactions and decisions. Recognize the power of authentic connections and collaborations, for they are the pillars that sustain a lasting career.

In conclusion, my advice to young musicians is a harmonious blend of skill, knowledge, and humanity. Learn to play an instrument, read music, and understand the business and entertainment facets of the industry. Navigate the path with integrity, embracing the human touch that sets you apart in a world captivated by artificial sounds. Your journey is not just about creating music; it’s about bringing humanity to every note and forging a lasting legacy.

If you could change anything about the music industry, what would it be?
Change about the music, and it would be the number one stop rigging billboard music. Also, there needs to be a category in the Grammys, or in country music, or any of these ward programs for them to have an independent artist section where they were, they patronize artist who won’t go along with the Rubiks cube of corruption in the music industry. Also entrepreneurial, councils and boards should be created for the entertainment industry alone in film and music. I created one in Wilmington North Carolina in the 90s called the coastal entrepreneurial Council. We found money for independent artist in filming music. That’s what should be happening.there needs to be a new industry created the patronize the art and the artist. Not the billionaires. That’s the problem. Get the billionaires out of music. Write the article, make it stern hard-core.

How do you feel about originality?
In the realm of art, originality stands as the paramount essence. Take a Picasso masterpiece portraying creation – it’s not just the subject, but the mastery in strokes that breathes life. In the symphony of music, each note echoes the irreplaceable uniqueness of human existence. Unlike bricks in a wall, as Pink Floyd noted, we are distinct human beings, akin to individual snowflakes. Our experiences, realities, and originality intertwine, forming the righteous tapestry of humanity.
